Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

In Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the characters in this fictional location can't wait to turn sixteen to receive their beautifying operation.  Once the procedure is done, each person can move into New Pretty Town and enjoy a lavish lifestyle of beauty and fun. While most girls and boys count down the days to their life-changing operation, there are still some who question the government's motive behind the change. "Out here you find out that the city fools you about how things really work." (Westerfeld 57) This book takes a turn once its protagonist finds out that the surgery doesn't only affect your physical appearance, but your thoughts and decisions.  A life of conformity to the projected standards of beauty causes society to obey whatever structures are set in place for them, leaving very few people to think rationally against the mind control that is being used against them.
